Grandmaster Yury Shulman Simul

Grandmaster Yuri Shulman returned to Jefferson HIgh School for a Chess Simul. to challenge the Rockford area Chess players to a simul. 33 players signed up for an exclusive opurtunity to play against the Grandmaster.

The event couldn’t have happened without the collaborate efforts of Jefferson Chess team’s head coach, Angel Alba, Roland Brown, Joseph Guth, Jeffery Doubek, Osvaldo Flores, who helped promote the event for the Rockford, Illinois chess community.

The following are games played at the event. GM Yury Shulman played white for all games. You may notice games ending abruptly, this is the result of players resigning or blitzing it out against the Grand Master. GM Yury Shulman played against 33 players for a total of 4 ½ hours.

All but one King fell

Ethan Vanderkolk, was the sole player that didn’t lose to GM Yury Shulman. By finding a knight sacrifice that gave him a pawn advanatage, Ethan was able to draw against the GM after they found themselves in a drawn position. Ethan is currently the assistant Chess coach at Auburn High School.
